Your Calendar Is a Physiology Problem

A soft path running through tall timber

Look at next week's calendar. Meetings stacked back to back, lunch eaten at a keyboard. The first quiet moment arrives after nine at night. Most people read that as a scheduling problem. It is also a physiology problem, because attention, judgment, and patience are biological outputs, and the calendar is deciding their inputs.

Sleep Is a Performance Tool

A foundational meta-analysis of prospective studies linked chronically short sleep to shorter life, and the short-term costs show up faster, in slower thinking and riskier decisions. The workweek move is unglamorous. Protect a consistent sleep window the way you would protect a meeting with your most important client, because that is what it is.

Movement Counts in Small Amounts

A pooled analysis of fifteen cohorts covering roughly 47,000 adults found that more daily steps mean lower mortality, with meaningful benefit starting well below the mythical 10,000. Walking meetings and a lap of the building between calls are how movement survives contact with a real schedule.

Recovery Is Part of the Work

Sustained focus without recovery degrades quietly, and most people notice only after the quality of their decisions has already slipped. Build transitions into the day: a hard stop that actually stops, and one evening a week that belongs entirely to something you love. In coaching we treat these as calendar items with the same standing as anything else on the schedule, because the schedule is where physiology gets decided.
